SUMMARY OF THE POEM

“The Monday Breeze” is a poem that reflects a busy Monday morning with an atmosphere of chaos and frenzy as a family gets ready for work and school. The mother handles the house chores alone as she prepares the children for school, who rush to catch up with the van. Daddy, on the other hand, sits behind the wheel waiting to drive the children to school. He complains that he is late, but Mother retorts that they would have left earlier and not been late if he (Daddy) had helped her manage household responsibilities.

STRUCTURE OF THE POEM

The poem is a free verse poem and has no definite rhyming scheme. It is made of ten lines with five stanzas with two lines each.
Again, the lines are short, fragmented sentences. This structure of the poem is used to depict or communicate a clear imagery of the events on that early Monday morning. Things were done in a hurry and then also disorganized just as the lines in the poem.

THEMES IN THE POEM

Gender Roles and Expectations: The poem highlights the role of each of the genders and what is expected of them.  The woman is usually assigned to keeping the house and handling the house chores.
“Mummy runs and returns”
This line showcases how the woman or mother was busy trying to beat time and getting the family ready for school and work. While the man is noted for dominance or patriarchy, he only complains and yells, which depicts the masculine authority in the house. “Daddy yells” reinforces traditional patriarchy.
 
Stereotyping. Stereotyping of women is another theme projected in the poem.   In the poem, women are presumed to be always forgetful, as they usually forget their purse.

Marital Tension: The poem hints at marital tension and authority. The father criticizes the mother for delaying their departure and keeps yelling at her. This tension reaches the climax as the woman also responds to her husband’s complaints and reveals that the man has become redundant with the household responsibilities.

Synecdoche: “Running legs”. Part of the body leg, has been used to represent the whole body. It depicts a busy environment where people were running up and down.
