Review: “Agoro” Efua Sutherland’s Short Plays Collection staged at the national theatre Ghana as part of the Centenary Celebration of the Efua Sutherland, a pioneer of Ghana Theatre.
The production was Directed by Elizabeth Sutherland and Kate wand on the evening of 25th September showcased a captivating collection of five short plays by Efua Sutherland. The production seamlessly wove together themes of love, forgiveness, and empathy. I must state that The enchanting play, tailored for children, stole my heart with its talented young cast.
This review will capitalize on the acting , sound and light , set and props ,costume and makeup , audience participation and finally rate the play over 10.
Acting
The kids on stage were absolute stars! Their passion and energy were infectious, and I was impressed by their confidence and talent. I love the adult cast who added to the young cast members , they complemented the children beautifully. I strongly believe the young starts learnt from the adult cast .
Set and Props:
I didn’t expect an elaborate set looking at the simplicity of the play. The simple, vibrant fabrics used were perfect. The numerous props added depth to the performance, and I appreciated their thoughtful incorporation.
Costume and Makeup
The simple, effective costumes and makeup suited the play’s tone. While the singer’s single outfit worked well, the dual-role actors’ quick changes were impressive.
Sound and Light
The sound and light weren’t over exaggerated. As stated earlier, the play is a simple play and believe the light and sound designers understood the assignment . The sound and light was Calm and Minimalist yet impactful.
Music and Dance
The soothing music and dance routines were beautifully choreographed, complementing the play’s emotional moments .I love the choice of music .
Audience Participation
Although the auditorium wasn’t full, the kids’ laughter and engagement created a warm atmosphere. Congratulations to the organizers . I rate this play 8/10
