PLOT OF “A BEACON OF LIGHT ” (A SHORT STORY)
The story “A Beacon of Light” is one of the literary texts featured in the new literature book titled ” The Beacon of Light” authored by Joshlyn Yayra Diabo, Adam Ankrah, Bryte Okrah, and Lucas Zanyo. This short story recounts the journey of Osmond, a Ghanaian cattle herder whose phenomenal singing talent makes him a hero for the village of Obane. As a storyteller, he usually shares his experiences on the field to entertain his sister and soothe her to sleep.
Unbeknownst to him that his destiny was about to change, Ms. Adjei, an Education Officer, hears him singing in the distance. Touched by his singing talent, she approaches him and agrees to help Osmond build on his talent. Ms. Adjei gains the consent of Osmond’s parents as well as the blessing of the village chief, Nene Attiapa; she relocates him from his rural village to Accra, where he pursues education, and music carrier.Through a scholarship, he attends Potters Gold School in Accra where Osmond excels academically and aligns himself with great friends such as Ama (a gifted pianist), who helps him develop his music skills and talent. His chemistry and hard work with Ama won him the “Best New Artist Award” at the Ghana Music Awards.
Following the awards and the national recognition, he is invited to a TV show, “StarTalk,” where the host, Kwame Ofosu, asks Osmond to share his “story” about his journey to become a star. Osmond recounts his touching journey at the village and how music inspired him to aspire higher. He also expresses gratitude to his family and Nene Attiapa for believing in him and expresses his enthusiasm to help his village gain social amenities.
After the show, one of the viewers, Mrs. Adwoa Konadu, reached out to Osmond’s team and used her organization, Empower Ghana, to transform his village, commissioning projects that improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure to fulfill Osmond’s dreams.
