Synopsis of the Play
Edufa is Efua Sutherland’s adaptation of the Greek classical play Alcestis by Euripides, reimagined in a Ghanaian setting. The play recounts the story of Edufa, an affluent man determined to sustain his wealth. He seeks spiritual guidance from a diviner, who reveals that death is approaching and that the only way to escape his fate is to find someone willing to die in his place.
Edufa returns home and summons his household, cunningly asking, “Who loves me enough to die for me?” His wife, Ampomaa, unknowingly falls into his trap. Without realizing that Edufa has concealed a charm on his body, she innocently promises to sacrifice her life for him. As the appointed day draws near, Ampomaa grows weaker and eventually dies on the very day her husband was destined to perish.
