About “The Beacon of Light” , The Approved Literature Text for Junior High Schools  in Ghana


On the 30th of January, 2025, The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) announced that the book titled “The Beacon of Light” will replace The Cock Crow, which has been  used for over 15 years by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES). The new literary book is authored by Joshlyn Yayra Diabo, Adam Ankrah, Bryte Okrah, and Lucas Zanyoh. In addition, a Commentary has also been added to the book. The commentary provides an in-depth analysis of the book’s contents, offering deeper insights to enhance understanding. The  Beacon of Light will be studied as part of the English Language Curriculum. Teachers preparing learners and learners preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in 2027 (Learners in JHS 1 for the 2024/2025 academic year) are advised to note of the current development.


Contents of the book


The book is a compilation of interesting, educational, and entertaining literary texts just as The Cock Crow. It cuts across all the genres of literature (Drama, Prose, and Poetry). It comprises sixteen (16) Literary texts. The breakdown includes nine (9) short stories (prose), three short (3) plays, and four (4) poems as seen below
