In Ama Ata Aidoo’s poignant drama, THE DILEMMA OF A GHOST, the complexities of cultural assimilation are laid bare. Ato Yawson, a young Ghanaian scholar, returns to his ancestral homeland after completing his studies in America, accompanied by his African-American bride, Eulalie. Unbeknownst to Ato, the integration of Eulalie into his traditional Ghanaian family would prove to be a formidable challenge.
The crux of the conflict lies in Eulalie’s decision to employ birth control, a choice that bewilders the women of Ato’s family. In Ghanaian culture, childbearing is an integral aspect of a woman’s life and status. Eulalie’s deliberate interference with the natural process of childbirth creates tension, prompting Ato to concoct a falsehood to explain their childlessness to his family.
Eulalie is devastated by Ato’s deception, unable to comprehend his unwavering loyalty to his cultural heritage. As a thoroughly Westernized woman, she is perplexed by the strictures of traditional Ghanaian society. This cultural disconnect ultimately leads to Eulalie’s downward spiral into heavy drinking, precipitating the disintegration of their relationship.
Through this tragic narrative, Aidoo masterfully excavates the intricate complexities of cultural identity, illuminating the fissures that can occur when disparate worlds collide.
