When I was a child, I believed Kweku Ananse was a bad character. To me, he was wicked, dishonest, and selfish. This idea came from watching By the Fire Side, a popular Ghanaian television programme that told traditional stories. In those stories, Ananse always behaved badly and usually ended up in trouble.
My mother also helped shape this view. Whenever she did not believe what someone was saying, she would say, “Me ntie Kweku Anansesɛm biara”, which means, “I don’t want to hear any lies.” Because of this, I grew up thinking Ananse stood for lies and bad behaviour.
As I grew older and received formal education, I began to understand that Ananse is more complex than I first thought.

Ananse in African Storytelling
Ananse stories are part of African folktales. Many scholars describe Ananse as an ancient and powerful character. He is both human and animal, which makes him different from ordinary characters. This mix helps him move between different worlds and situations.
Some people see Ananse as selfish, greedy, and disrespectful of rules. He often breaks social norms to satisfy his own needs. Because of this, many people think he is a bad example. However, this view does not show the full picture.

Ananse as a Human Figure
Although Ananse is a spider, he is usually presented as a human being in stories. He even has a human name, Kweku, which is given to boys born on a Wednesday in Ghana. He has a wife and children, just like many ordinary people.
His children’s names describe special qualities. One represents intelligence, another represents endurance, and another represents the ability to escape danger. These qualities also describe Ananse himself. His family is shown as a human family, but with funny and exaggerated features.

A Reflection of Human Behaviour
Ananse behaves like humans do. He works as a farmer but is sometimes lazy. Instead of working hard, he may steal from others. He is selfish and does not always share with his family. He makes friends only when it benefits him, and once he gets what he wants, he moves on.
Ananse is always travelling. He never stays in one place for long. Through his interactions with people, he learns how to manipulate situations to his advantage. Even though he knows what is right and wrong, he chooses to follow his own rules.

Wise but Foolish
Ananse is very clever, but he can also be foolish. In one story, he tries to keep all the world’s knowledge for himself by putting it in a pot. He falls, the pot breaks, and knowledge spreads everywhere. Because of his mistake, everyone gains access to wisdom.
This shows that Ananse’s failures often teach important lessons.

Why Ananse Is Important
Ananse is not just a liar or a trickster. He represents human weaknesses and strengths. He is clever and foolish, selfish and caring, creative and destructive. His stories help people think about life, behaviour, and society.
Through Ananse stories, people learn lessons while being entertained. That is why Kweku Ananse remains an important and memorable character in African storytelling.
